Jean-Claude Roy
biography
Jean Claude Roy (b. 1948, France) is an internationally collected French painter celebrated for his richly textured palette-knife landscapes, Largely self-taught, Roy’s distinctive expressionist style combines bold colour, luminous light, and expressive texture to capture the spirit and emotion of a place.
Working primarily in oils, Roy divides his time between his studios in France and Newfoundland, Canada, He frequently paints en plein air, working directly within the landscapes that surround him. Since the late 1980s, the radiant sun has become a signature element in his compositions, lending warmth and energy to each scene.
His paintings are represented in public and private collections throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.
The works presented by Rodrigues Contemporary were painted in Newfoundland and reflect the province’s dramatic coastline, colourful communities, and unmistakable sense of place—subjects for which Jean-Claude Roy has become especially recognized among Canadian collectors.
